it’s international waffle day today (25th march)

how cool is that? maybe if i can try my luck finding an international muffin or scone day on google. 😛

the story:
International Waffle Day (March 25) originated in Sweden where it is called VÃ¥ffeldagen. It occurs nine months to the day before Christmas – the day the Archangel Gabriel told the Virgin Mary that she was pregnant. As the holiday progressed, it also began to commemorate the first day of spring. Waffles come into play because on March 25th the women of Sweden would set aside their winter tasks like chopping wood and knitting, and began their spring tasks… the most notable of which was preparing waffles.

apparently there’s another national waffle day in the united states on the 24th of august which has another story of its own:
it is the anniversary of the first U.S. patent for a waffle iron. Cornelius Swarthout of Troy, New York received his patent for a “device to bake waffles” in 1869. His early waffle iron was used in conjunction with coal stoves, consisted of a griddle and a cover and required flipping of the device to cook both sides of the waffle. At present, National Waffle Day is at best a “bizarre” or “unique” holiday” – the fluff stuff of radio DJ commentary. Waffle promotions at some restaurant chains have helped to keep the holiday alive, if only barely.

(both stories are from mrbreakfast)

it’s really sweet that such things are being commemorated. the little pockets of stories hidden here and there which are being lost along the way as tradition gets lost or not thought about anymore.

in singapore, we have a waffle day too…the gelare waffle tuesday when waffles will be going at half price.. 😛 yummy…with 2 scoops of sorbert on top and lots of maple syrup…. (no whip cream please!!)

good friday holiday..

thanks to the criminal on the run..
security at customs has stepped up..
especially at the causeways to malaysia..

we were dying for some good food and cheap shopping..
so we thought it will be quite fun totry and take the train in to johor bahru..
although we had to be there (the tanjong pagar train station) like reallllllly early (train leaves at 730am)..
it still beat being stuck in the crazy jam with lots of motorbike smoke..

from this point onwards…
everything bit of the area here belongs to malaysia..

there wasn’t even any crazy people queue..
no mad rush…

jbtrain01

there’s still time to get some munchies..

jbtrain02

~ i totally knocked out ~

the next thing i know…
we were arriving at the malaysian customs already…
that was seriously an easy ride in..

jbtrain03

after getting our stamps in the passports…
getting back on the train was still easy…

jbtrain04

the train has it own way across the causeway..

jbtrain05

here we are…

jbtrain07

only a few people got off at johor bahru while the rest continues their journey to other parts of malaysia..
so there was no fuss at the malaysian custom as well…

our destination..

Leong

my mr fabulous. i have never met a guy as fabulous as him.

and i have never let a hairdresser cut my hair twice ever since i was old enough and rich enough to pay for my own haircut. until i met Leong in 2005. and i took a peep on my appointment card today, it was 12th april 2005 when i had my first haircut with him. and today….my last… 😦 he will be moving to sydney in a few days. i had come from being a paranoid with long hair, to the ‘you can cut whatever you want’ today with him. yeah, i shed my long hair under his hands. it took me a long time to find someone i can trust my hair with completely. and it takes even more to believe that i can ever face the world with short hair. he just know what to do all the time. and i have never for once went to him and regretted what he did for me.

in fact, he had to get me out of the shit hole twice. yeah, i attempted stupid things with my hair twice after a cut with him. rebonding and etc…and i seriously went back crying to him to beg him the very next day to savage whatever he can. and twice, he pulled me through. it’s amazing how he can just react on the spot so quickly and make me look like a human again…haha..

i first met Leong not knowing he’s such a celebrity hair stylist and a “celebrity” in his own ways. an ex-colleague of mine introduced him to me and the strangest thing i found out later is that my ex-colleague has never had a cut with him!! the 3 years i have been having my haircut with him, he has promote from senior stylist to stylist director. like major wow!! then of course…i have seen his celebrity clientèle walking in and out the salon at uptown paragon. the only times we intertact is when i go for a haircut…and that’s probably of a maximum of 6 times a year. but you know, we talk about travelling…shopping…fashion…designers…a little bit of our private lives and families. and from all that i know of him, he’s such a humble guy. something i respect very much.

he’s the 2nd person in my life who has an impact on my appearance. first it was wykidd song who decided to stop designing clothes…and i could never really find another dress i can feel more exclusive and special in anymore. but it is still not bad as a guy who has a direct impact on my physical appearance, yeah my hair. i think i am going  back to my paranoid-about-my-hair thing.  i am very sad that he’s leaving. but happy at the same time that he’s going to start something exciting ahead of him.

i am going to miss you Leong!!…*hugz*

happy st patrick’s day.

(should be march 17th)

after hiding at home for a few days studying hard for my life saving and cpr courses. i was out parading with not just the irish here in singapore but some other singaporeans and not forgetting my world-domination partner who has kindly invited me to come along with her.

it was just a short march from the asian civilisation museum right across to the uob plaza just across at boat quay. different groups, ireland or irish related participated in the parade: dragon boat teams, american school girl scouts, polytechnics and universities of singapore, several irish pubs (durty nelly’s…molly malone’s..etc), the star wars fan club of singapore!!….even the big brother of guinness – DIAGEO direct from ireland.

all the little ones are more prepared for the parade than anyone else!!

heading towards the bridge to get to uob plaza (next to check point – penny black!! where nice cold guinness is served)

i am not sure if darth vadar or the storm troopers are in any way irish…maybe the “humans” inside

true irish twins!!

the people providing the beats to make the whole parade more festive..even i can’t help but dance along as well.. 😉

spectators and participants of the parade as well the event performances

lepricons!!

the guinness penguins..(i like the ones in the commercial better :P)

gOOd bYe to the blue-mobile…

simon says..
good bye to his blue mobile…

goodbye1

yeah boys & their cars & toys..
he of course has already something coming his way…

6 ticket studs in 3 days.

yeah..movie marathon is my thing if i have some time off. maybe…a lot of time. the old cinema opposite my house has made it so easy for me to do this without burning a whole in my pocket. overseas princess cinema. almost the last neighbourhood cinema left in singapore. tickets are at $5 for the weekday off peak thing and $7.50 max for the weekend. no it isn’t anything like those dodgy dirty-old-man cinema. this is clean and everything is still working well, just that the seats aren’t the not-so-fantastic-as-well cushioned seats of golden village.

i was in 4 movies on monday and 2 just yesterday. 4 has been my record so far for full length movies. 😛

ah long pte ltd (mandarin) -118mins

meet the spartans (english) – 84mins

the water horse (english) – 112mins

rule#1 (mandarin) – 95mins

the leap years (english/cantonese) – 103mins

bangkok love story (thai) – 110mins

a “grand” total of 622mins which is equivalent to about 10.5hrs spent in the dark (not totally). and guess what? i didn’t gorge myself to death with any popcorn and nachos…that’s quite a record too – no munchies.

i just like watching movies, no matter how good or how bad they are. it is always subjective, so i can only find out for myself if it’s really crappy or really good. and yeah….foreign films are cool too. they just feel different, and because i am not so exposed to them, they probably are less predictable. and they are usually a little bit more experimental since they are not really main stream. i like… 😛
