last night after swimming…i was sitting on pavement waiting to go watch ironman.
on the other side of the road, there was an old man sitting on the pavement as well. back facing me. but i could clearly see what uncle was doing. he had drink cans all around him…and was flattening them with his walking stick. he had 2 big red plastic bag as well – one carrying all the cans that he had collected…and the other one carrying all the cans that he had flattened.
it was 9pm at night. and i could see uncle still had a lot of drink cans to flatten.
then i felt ashame of the new stella mccartney dress that i had bought out of impulse some how. it costs me quite a bit. ok…being unhappy is not good enough a reason to splurge. i look at uncle and i think…he has every reason to be unhappy more than me.
i did a quick equation while i was still sitting there:
if 1kg of aluminum drink cans is worth about $0.20 to sell to the recycling center,
i will need to collect and sell 1420kg of drink cans.
if 1 drink can weighs 50grams,
i will need to collect 284000 drink cans to make up 1420kg.
if i can collect 10kg of drink cans per day,
i will need to collect drink cans for 142 days.
142 days = almost 5 months.
that’s how much effort it needs if i were to buy the stella dress with drink cans. when i did the sums, it sound very scary to me.
i will really remember this….
i wish she can keep it up and stay in good health.
