my grandma has been a smoker for slightly more than 61 years.
she has decided to quit and when i visited her today, she has stopped smoking for 5 days. she told me she finished her last pack of ciggies and just didn’t want to buy anymore.
that was when she started talking about her good old days to mum and me. it was nice. because i know very little about her and her life.
she said she started smoking when she was 22 years old. when she first went out to work. and it was a social thing because everybody around her were smoking. that was also when she just had my first uncle. my mum asked her if my grandpa smoked back then as well. my grandma said my grandpa did…for a while until a medical report says that his weak heart is not able to take cigarettes and alcohol.
i also head that my grandpa went to brunei to work for a while. about a year and a half. that was the period of time he indulge in so much alcohol that he burnt his gastric. and apparently, my grandpa claimed that alcohol was cheaper than drinking water in brunei!! to be honest…it was believable to a certain extend. after all, countries like australia…italy are like that.
my grandpa came back to singapore because of his poor health and stopped working for a while. until singapore was developing back then and the 2 major express ways were being built. first the pan island expressway (pie)…then another one which my grandma mentioned was at changi…the tampines expressway (tpe)?
i feel happy to hear of something from my grandma’s life. the only thing i can remember from young is that they were both separated. and of course, the better piece of news is that my grandma has not been smoking …
i wish she can keep it up and stay in good health.
and yeah…my grandma said she didn’t like my red necklace today. said it doesn’t really look nice with my blue dress. maybe a pink one is better…hahaha…i think she’s so cool…
