L’Inconnue de la Seine

That’s french for “the unknown woman of the Seine”. Seine…a river in Paris.

i started my lifesaving course just on sunday. and there’s a cpr part to it before i can qualify to be a lifeguard. yes….how i look forward to some bumming at the beach just enjoying the wind and the sun. not forgetting the responsibility of watching the people in the waters of course… :P

there’s a mannequin used in the cpr course and her name is little anne. yeah…it’s a girl. i remember this from my rescue diver course but i never quite thought that little anne is the universal name of this mannequin. the lifesaving instructor briefly explained the history of little anne, that a lady was drown in this river and her name is anne. so, cpr and lifesaving techniques were started because of the high drowning rate back in the older days. so the mannequin is named after that lady who drown in the river.

but wiki says that the lady was never identified!! :O so….she probably wasn’t an “anne”. apparently, the pathologist at the paris morgue was smitten by the beauty of this unidentified woman that he decided to make a plaster cast her face. she then sort of become a standard for beauty for a while.

in 1958, this face was then used for the head of the cpr mannequin and she was called “rescue annie”. and from then, it became “the most kissed face”.
